Network Topologies

What are common network topologies?

Star Topology

  • All devices connected to a central switch or server.

  • Advantages → reliable, if one cable fails the rest work; easy to add devices.

  • Disadvantages → expensive (more cable), switch failure affects whole network.

Mesh Topology

  • Every device connects to every other

  • No single point of failure, as data can find an alternate route

  • High performance

  • Expensive and complex setup

Five devices, including a desktop and laptops, are interconnected on a simple network diagram. Each device is labeled "Device."
